EMPOWERED.GURU(1): OPERATOR MANUAL

Operator, not
consultant.

Thirty years building and running real companies. Exits, failures, fundraises, and the judgment that comes with all of it. This page is the honest version of the pitch.

Brian Marvin

AI-Native Fractional CTO - Built for the Age of Disruption

  1. 01

    Thirty years in the trade

I started in my late teens, back when computers were just showing up. I am 50 now, so that is 30+ years in. I have owned several tech companies with a few successful exits: Marvin Technology, MTC Inc (an MSP), Aegis Foundry, Sidekick Digital, SmartPOS, and Mpower. Development, SaaS, accounting, server hosting, the full Microsoft suite including Great Plains, and hardcore CRM work in Zoho, HubSpot, and Salesforce. Client IT and tech consulting has been the whole career.

  2. 02

The hard parts are honest ones

The hardest stretches were the ones between businesses: raising money, and living through the occasional project or startup failure. The wins were real too. SmartPOS runs in hundreds of hospitals and hundreds of franchise restaurants, and I have raised angel rounds for my own startups. I have been the CTO for over a hundred companies across hospitality, real estate, insurance, hospitals and healthcare, manufacturing, and franchisors. That is the track record you are actually paying for.

  3. 03

    What you actually get

Expertise, an MVP, coaching and mentorship, and a fully managed technology stack. That is the package. The part founders keep mentioning afterward: easy to work with, knowledgeable, motivated to win. Creative and empowering. Not a gatekeeper. I would rather hand you the keys and teach you to drive.

~/off-duty: San Diego

Hikes, beach, gardening, long walks.

Based in San Diego. Foodie, philosophical reader, computer nut for life. The same curiosity that keeps me in the code keeps me on the trail and in the garden. Grounded work comes from a grounded life.

line 01

Make it exist, then iterate.

A thing that ships teaches you more than a thing that is planned. Get it in front of real users first, then improve it with their hands on it.

line 02

Find market fit and stay focused.

Then add the features you can see clients actually need. Not the ones that sound good in a pitch.

line 03

Servant leadership beats a dictatorship every time.

Teams that are trusted ship faster, break less, and stay longer. Ego is the most expensive line item on a payroll.

line 04

Company culture is everything.

Strategy survives contact with a bad culture. Culture survives contact with almost anything.

line 05

SLM will beat LLM.

Small, focused models aimed at one job beat giant general ones for most business work. Right tool, right size.

line 06

Coding with AI still needs deep technical knowledge.

The models are not always right. They gaslight, punt, and underperform. Experience is what tells you when, and how to get them back on track.

Six lines, no revisions since the 90s. This is how every engagement gets run.

GenAI & LLMs, on stage.

Transformer architecture, prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation, the working version, not the hype version. I walk engineering teams and founder rooms through how large language models actually behave, so the next AI decision gets made with eyes open.

Available for founder offsites and engineering all-hands. No sales deck: working session only.

Judgment stays with the operator. Throughput comes from the fleet. You get both.
